Verkið byggir á rannsókn á íslenskum botnamerkjum frá síldarárunum, þar sem letur og merkingar voru notaðar til að auðkenna tunnur í síldarvinnslu. Botnamerkin eru dæmi um hrátt handverk og bera með sér sögu iðnaðarsamfélags sem er nú að mestu liðið undir lok. Í verkefninu er leturform botnamerkjanna greint með áherslu á stenslaletur, hlutföll og ýmsa galla sem verða til við notkun þess. Út frá rannsókninni þróa ég nýtt letur sem er innblásið af þessum formum og kanna hvernig hægt er að miðla sögulegum og menningarlegum arfi í bókverki. Verkið tengir saman rannsókn, hönnun og frásögn í sjónrænu formi.

The project is based on research into Icelandic barrel marks from the herring era, where lettering and symbols were used to identify barrels in the herring industry. These barrel marks are examples of raw craftsmanship and carry with them the history of an industrial society that has come to an end. In the project, the letterforms of the barrel marks are analyzed with a focus on stencil typography, proportions, and the irregularities that emerge through their use. Based on this research, I develop a new typeface inspired by these forms and explore how historical and cultural heritage can be communicated through a printed publication. The project brings together research, design, and storytelling in a visual form.
