Hrófin

Steinbryggjan stendur staðföst úr móbergi elsta hluta eyjunnar, sjálfumHeimakletti, táknmynd fastans, hins eilífa. Við hlið hennar rís andstæðan, tímabundin timburbygging, reist fyrir hverfula ábúendur: skýli sem stendur á stultum í höfninni, á stað uppsáturs báta liðinna alda.

Byggingin er rannsókn á þeim rýmisgæðum sem búa í mannvirkjum og menningararfi eyjunnar; gæðum sem ef til vill voru aldrei skilgreind sem slík, en geta nú í nýju samhengi orðið sýnileg og öðlast nýtt líf. Með því að vinna með minni staðarins í formi, efnisvali og strúktúr dregur byggingin fram þessa rýmislegu möguleika og fléttar þeim inn í samtímaarkitektúr.

The stone pier stands firmly, hewn from palagonite tuff from the oldest part of the island, Heimaklettur, a symbol of permeance, and the eternal. Beside it rises its opposite, a temporary timber structure, built for its transient occupants. A shelter standing on stilts in the harbor, on the site where boats have been hauled ashore for centuries.

The building draws attention to the spatial qualities that can be drawn from the island’s structures and cultural heritage. Qualities that may never have been defined as such, yet can become visible in a new context. By working with the memory of the place through form, material choice and structure, the building seeks to reveal these spatial possibilities and bring them into contemporary architecture.
