Community through Creativity — Re-imagining the Icelandic Community House

This project re-imagines the Icelandic community house for contemporary life, building on its historical role as a place for gatherings, performances, celebrations, and local events. While these functions remain important, the proposal expands the idea of the community house by introducing creativity and shared making as part of everyday social practices.The design is rooted in adaptable re‑use, transforming an existing building into a flexible

social framework that can continue to evolve with the community.

A new public plaza forms the entrance to the project, defined by a light, open structure that frames the outdoor space. This plaza links the residential neighbourhood with the surrounding landscape and emerging cultural activities, allowing the buildings to become a meeting place woven into everyday life.

Inside, flexible halls host communal events, while open workshops provide space for people to learn, make, and work together across generations. A communal kitchen and greenhouse continue this idea through growing, cooking, and sharing meals together, creating opportunities for everyday social connection.

The architecture emphasises warmth, clear circulation, and adaptable spaces that encourage both organised events and informal encounters. Rather than functioning as a single-purpose cultural building, the project is designed as an open framework that can evolve with the needs of the community.

The proposal aims to renew the role of the Icelandic community house by creating a place where culture, creativity, and everyday life come together, supporting a stronger sense of participation, connection, and belonging.
