Bókmerki, ex libris, er persónulegt merki, prentað og límt eða stimplað innan eða utan á spjald bóka. Merkið er hægt að fjöldaframleiða með markmiðinu að merkja bækur eigandanum. Merkin eru falleg lítil listaverk útbúin af eigandum eða af listamönnum. Þessi bók er um bókmerkjasafn Ólafs F. Hjartar bókavarðar. Ólafur safnaði bókmerkjum lengi og átti stórt bókmerkjasafn af íslenskum bókmerkjum. Þegar ég kynntist bókmerkjasafni hans, sem er varðveitt á Landsbókasafni Íslands, fannst mér synd að merkin væru ekki til sýnis. Ég vildi gefa þeim líf utan skjalaöskjunnar. Bókmerki afa míns vakti fyrst áhuga minn á ex libris og leiddi mig á þessa skemmtilegu braut. Þetta er mín tilraun til að sýna hvað mér þykir áhugavert og fagurt við bókmerki og menningu þeirra.

A bookplate, ex libris, is a personal emblem, printed and pasted—or stamped—inside or outside a book’s cover. These marks can be mass-produced so the owner can identify their books. They are small, beautiful works of art created either by the owner or hired artists. This book explores the bookplate collection of Ólafur F. Hjartar. He accumulated these bookplates over a long period of time while he worked as a librarian. I gained access to the collection at the National Library of Iceland. It seemed a shame that the plates were not on display there, and I wanted to give them life beyond the archive box. My grandfather’s bookplate first sparked my interest in ex libris and led me down this enjoyable path. This is my attempt to show what I find interesting and beautiful about bookplates and their culture.
