Nýja Ból

Elliðaey er þriðja stærsta eyja Vestmannaeyja og hefur lengi heillað mig vegna dularfullrar og einangraðrar nærveru sinnar. Eyjan birtist reglulega í alþjóðlegum fyrirsögnum sem „einmanalegasta eyja í heimi“ eða undir dularfullum titlum sem tengja hana við uppvakninga eða eignarhald tónlistarkonunnar Bjarkar. Á eyjunni stendur eitt mannvirki, veiðihús Elliðaeyjarfélagsins, þar sem meðlimir dvelja árstíðabundið við eggjatöku og lundaveiðar. Núverandi hús hefur náð endimörkum líftíma síns vegna mikils álags frá náttúruöflunum.

Nýja Ból er hannað sem svar við aðstæðum eyjarinnar, þar sem byggingin fellur að landslaginu og verður hluti af því. Án vatns og rafmagns, safnar byggingin og geymir regnvatn til að viðhalda sjálfbærri notkun.

Elliðaey is the third largest island in Vestmannaeyjar. The location fascinated me due to its mysterious solitary presence, often appearing in headlines as “The Loneliest Island in the World.” Today only one structure stands on the island: the hunting lodge of the Elliðaey Association, used seasonally during egg collecting and puffin hunting. Having reached the end of its lifespan, the lodge reflects a constant struggle against nature and has been rebuilt three times.

Nýja Ból responds to the island’s harsh conditions by draping from the hillside as part of the landscape itself, collecting and storing rainwater to sustain the building. Without access to water or electricity, the architecture is shaped by the need to independently meet these challenges through self-sustaining solutions.
