Mediating Misfits leggur til frumgerð að Food Re-Decision

Facility við Súðarvog 23 og 2f, innan skipulagssvæðisins Vogabyggðar – Svæðis 2 og nálægt flutnings- og dreifikerfi Sundahafnar. Verkefnið bregst við því augnabliki þegar viðkvæmu grænmeti er hafnað í dreifikerfinu, þótt það geti enn verið ætilegt eða nýtanlegt.

Í stað þess að höfnun leiði beint til úrgangs prófar verkefnið hvernig arkitektúr getur skapað stýrða biðstöðu innan matvæladreifikerfisins. Þar er hægt að skoða, kæla, vinna, endurdreifa, umbreyta eða farga matvöru eftir ástandi hennar.

Tillagan endurnýtir núverandi vöruhús og skipuleggur það í tvo tengda hluta: iðnaðarhluta fyrir meðhöndlun matvæla og opinberan hluta fyrir almenning. Opinberi hlutinn inniheldur matsölur, borðsvæði, sýningarrými, kennslurými og útsýnispall þar sem gestir geta fylgst með völdum hlutum ferlisins.

Staðsett milli dreifikerfis, íbúðarsvæða og framtíðaruppbyggingar spyr verkefnið hvernig arkitektúr getur skapað tíma, umhyggju og nýtt gildi fyrir mat áður en hann verður að úrgangi.

Mediating Misfits proposes a prototype Food Re-Decision Facility at Súðarvogur 2e and 2f, within the Vogabyggð – Svæði 2 planning area and close to Sundahöfn’s logistics corridor. The project responds to the moment when perishable vegetables are commercially rejected even though they may still be edible or materially usable.

Instead of claiming to absorb all rejected produce in Reykjavík, the project tests how architecture can create a controlled pause within the food distribution system. Rejected produce can be inspected, stabilized, processed, redistributed, transformed, or discarded according to its condition.

The proposal reuses an existing warehouse and reorganizes it into two connected parts: an industrial wing for food handling and a civic wing for public access. The public wing includes food stalls, dining areas, exhibition space, educational rooms, and a viewing deck where visitors can observe selected parts of the process.

Positioned between logistics infrastructure, residential areas, and future urban transformation, the project asks how architecture can create time, care, and new value for food before it becomes waste.
