Leir án hefðar / Unrooted clay

Lifnaðarhættir Íslendinga breyttust hratt í upphafi seinustu aldar, meðal annars þegar litið er til matseldar og borðhalds. Notkun asksins dvínaði hratt og um allt land tók fólk að borða þess heldur af innfluttu postulíni. Leir án hefðar er tilgáta um notkun og útlit íslensks keramiks, hefðu Íslendingar þróað eigin keramikhefð í stað þess að flytja borðbúnað inn og um leið nýja siði. Óhætt er að segja að ýmsir gripir úr keramik hafi nýst sem sögulegar heimildir í gegnum tíðina og er tilgangur verkefnisins að skapa hugmynd að sögu og mögulega hefð fyrir Íslendinga, eftir á.

Icelanders’ way of life changed rapidly at the beginning of the last century, especially when it comes to cooking and dining. The use of the wooden askur declined quickly as people across the country started using imported ceramic tableware. Unrooted clay is a speculative exploration of the use and appearance of Icelandic ceramics, if Icelanders had developed their own ceramic tradition instead of importing tableware along with new customs. It is fair to say that various ceramic artifacts have served as historical sources over time, and the purpose of the project is to construct that history and possible tradition for Icelanders, retrospectively.
