The lecture series Samhengi welcomes Brandon LaBelle on Friday, September 18, where he will discuss listening as a creative and transformative force.
In the lecture Poetics of Listening, LaBelle explores how listening can create connections, foster social awareness, and open new ways of being together and relating to one another.
Poetics of Listening
In what ways does listening move us, supporting connections with others? As many scholars and practitioners demonstrate, listening is a transformative capacity that impacts onto experiences of social recognition and embodied wellbeing. It moreover shapes our political worlds, influencing cultures of conflict and how we may work at repair. Following these perspectives, the presentation reflects upon listening as what enables expanded states of relationality and agency. This includes posing listening as a conduit for broader connections beyond human worlds. Taking account of listening’s effects, I’ll introduce a number of artistic and curatorial examples, such as The Listening Biennial, which I founded in 2021 and which I develop through a form of “curatorial affection”. Curatorial affection will be discussed as a practice or sensibility that works at holding space for others, and that follows from poetic power, as what supports radical hospitality, moving us from a dominant system of “production”and toward “receptivity”, from a logic of separation and toward feelings of interdependency. Through such a framework, I hope to elaborate what it means to listen with affection.
Brandon LaBelle is an artist, writer, theorist, and artistic director of The Listening Biennial and Listening Academy. His work focuses on questions of agency, community, pirate culture, and poetics, which results in a range of artistic presentations and extra-institutional initiatives, including Communities in Movement (2019-23), Oficina de Autonomia (2017-), The Living School (with South London Gallery, 2014-16), The Imaginary Republic (2014-19), Dirty Ear Forum (2013-22), Surface Tension (2003-2008), and Beyond Music Sound Festival (1998-2002). In 1995 he founded Errant Bodies Press, an independent publishing project supporting work in sound art and studies, performance and poetics, artistic research and contemporary political thought. His publications include Poetics of Listening (2025), Dreamtime X (2022), Acoustic Justice (2021), The Other Citizen (2020), Sonic Agency (2018), Lexicon of the Mouth (2014), Diary of an Imaginary Egyptian (2012), Acoustic Territories (2010), and Background Noise (2006).
