Blood of the Earth – Holistic Record of Experience

Artist: Svend Holmboe Pedersen, 2nd year MA Fine Art student

This exhibition is an exploration of a material called bog iron which is collected in the Icelandic wetlands close to my home. Bog iron is an iron oxide mineral that gets pulled from the earth via natural springs. Historically this mineral was used by Vikings as a resource for iron processing to craft tools and weapons. My personal discovery of this material has led to a plethora of experiences such as learning about ancient metallurgy methods for iron processing and using experimental archaeology as a tool for hands on learning. This process is directed by an exuberant work ethic that functions as a catalyst for personal and spiritual resonance. The exhibition aims to shows this holistic experience by using the trace items created from the process and video works journaling the many steps I have taken to produce wrought iron.

Svend is a Danish artist based in Iceland that works with rediscovering obsolete materials and methods of production. This unconventional process often leads to the question of where his own artistic practice is placed withing contemporary society. His process often traces back to childhood memories where Svend finds inspiration and personal connections within his art practice. His art works touch on artistic experimentation as well as the joy of field work. He emphasizes how work ethics can be a source for fulfilling experiences. Different learning methods are a big part of Svend’s interests as he utilizes learning by doing approaches to exploring materials.
