STRAND

STRAND

Strand has the same meaning in both Swedish and German. In this exhibition, Alva Lobråten and Johann Joesten circle around Strand and water – what is present, and what only becomes visible with withdrawal. Within a small room, the exhibition takes form as both a reading/performance and installation.

The Performance will start at 5 pm,
Sunday 7th of December, at GARG Bookstore.

Alva Lobråten
I came to Iceland in search of feelings I’ve been missing. Without being sure of what those were I started looking for them in the landscape. Some I knew I was longing for, others revealed themselves to me along the way.

The importance of coexisting with nature soon became clear to me; my surroundings had answers to questions I did not even have to ask. I tried to listen and found it the easiest by water. All come from water and all need water. The kelp spoke to me and told me that we are the same. Together we created poetry.

In the videowork I invite the viewer to reflect upon coexistence through new perspectives continuously created by water and its movement.

Johann Joesten
Visit the sea.
Stay until your body is cold enough to long for shelter.
Walk inland. Find the nearest construction site.
Ask the person working there if you can take the old bárujárn.
Look up the word bárujárn.
Measure your body with whatever you have at hand.
Cut wood.
Wrap the corrugated iron around these measurements.
Build a shelter that hugs you awkwardly.
Shape it to fit the shoreline, as well as you.
Return to the sea and sit inside the shelter.
Look out.

Looking forward to see you there <3
