MORRÍSLAND
Glöggt er gests augað

Morrísland is a visualisation of William Morris’s (and my own) experiences of and relationship to Iceland. The project visualises my findings and interpretations from more than a decade of ongoing research into Morris and Iceland. The principal output being a metaphorical map/atlas. I will outline how my postmodern appropriation of Ortelius’s 1590 map, facilitated the collection, interpretation and visualisation of an eclectic ambit of “data”. As with any map, the Morrísland map is an interpretation and approximation based on available data, cultural biases and agendas (Harley & Woodward, 1987). We will journey to regions such as: The Peninsular of Eschewal & Escape, The Bay of Cuckolds, and The Jökul of Ambiguous Reality & Myth. Here I will discuss how, when and why Morris visited Iceland. I will also posit how Morris’s Icelandic experiences were a precursor to his passion for books, typography, heritage protection, socialism and women’s suffrage
