Johannes Dagsson, associate professor and head of studies in the Faculty of Fine Arts received a research permit in the spring semester of 2025 to examine and analyze the characteristics of the methodology of art research He then reports on the project:
„The project consists in using the methodology of philosophy to analyze and clarify a certain characteristic of the methodology of art research" Art research is often defined based on a research concept where the structure, methodology and internal consistency of the research is specific to each study (even each work) individually. This differs from other knowledge subjects, where certain methods, approaches and presentations are standardized or general, either over many studies, or over entire fields of study. This has the consequences that the relationship between individual art research, with the field of study in which it takes place within but diverse and flexible, and also that certain criteria that are often used to evaluate and communicate the results of research, are less relevant, or not at all, when it comes to art research projects, focuses on clarifying and analyzing what is involved in this specific relationship that art research has with existing knowledge within academic fields, and how research processes and the concept are affected by this specific definition of knowledge through the field of knowledge that it becomes possible to clarify and the field of knowledge.
The estimated result of the project is a theoretical article, intended for publication on a peer-reviewed and recognized professional platform, a visual article, and a course description based on the project.“
Research permits are 85 working days or about 17 weeks According to the school's rules, the formal conditions for granting a research permit are that the employee has defined a research rate within the employment contract, has fulfilled his professional duties under that contract, and can demonstrate effectiveness in research at the start of the research permit. The projects carried out must be in the special field for which the employee is employed at the school and lead to communication at the public level.
The Professional Council Research Committee evaluates applications and makes a proposal for their prioritization based on professional criteria for the value of a project for the field of study of the arts, the clarity of the research plan, the feasibility of the project and timetable and the plan for dissemination, as well as with regard to the formal conditions of the Rector granting a research permit.
For the current school year, permits were allocated to Gunndís Ýrar Finnbogadóttir, the art education department, Þorbjargar Daphne Hall, the music department and Lóa Auðunsdóttir, the design department.
We wish Bjarka, Atla and Jóhannes the best of luck with the allocation and look forward to hearing more about the results of the research later.
