The Art Department of the Iceland Academy of the Arts creates a rewarding and dynamic environment where students can gain knowledge in the field of contemporary visual art and cultivate relationships with the visual arts scene, national and international Studies in art at the faculty are at the BA and MA level.

A wide range of projects are offered in the fields of artistic creation, crafts and disciplines that encourage students to analyse and creative visual thinking Students are encouraged to formulate an independent view of the world, guided by intuition, critical thinking and historical awareness.

During the study period, students can choose for specialization within the main media and methods of art; two-dimensional and three-dimensional, sculpture, painting, printing, installations, photography, video, sound and performance There are no media-related study paths with the department, but emphasis is placed on students themselves exploring diverse possibilities for artistic creation and acquiring skills in practical practice as well as academic thinking.

Teaching takes place in courses, drawing on both group guidance and private guidance, in lectures, seminars, discussions and critiques in smaller groups, and technical instruction by experts in the department's workshops Teachers at the Department of Fine Arts are active in their profession, and a number of guest teachers and lecturers from various countries make their way around the department each year.

Contemporary art is not limited only to the visual but can rely on almost any medium It unhesitatingly draws on music, writing, acting, dance, filmmaking and design As a result, the visual arts world is a kind of laboratory where new methods and ideas are explored All creative disciplines benefit from the results.

After completing his studies
Studying at the Faculty of Fine Arts makes students more qualified to work independently as visual artists in the international art world; participate in exhibitions, discussions and the development of the professional environment of art in Iceland, apply for international workshops and work grants.

The program is also used for a variety of art-related jobs, for example in museums, teaching, education and communication. In today's society, ever-increasing demands are placed on creative, analytical thinking and independent working methods.
