The Iceland University of the Arts employs artists and academics who conduct research in and on the arts and in art education.
The University of the Arts requires its researchers always to disseminate their findings publicly and accessibly, to specialists and the general public alike, whether in artistic or academic contexts. The direct and immediate relationship that the arts have with different age groups, lay and expert audiences alike, is one of the strengths of the field when assessing research benefits, as social impact is often significant and evident.
The University is responsible for the development of the academic field of the arts within Higher Education in Iceland and emphasizes the research value of creative methods and artistic practices.
Artistic research includes diverse methods and means of communication developed through the approach of contemporary artistic practices. They proceed from a specifically defined knowledge core, subjects and questions brought forth through creative processes and the interaction of practical and theoretical analysis. The research is either located within the university´s disciplines and departments of Architecture, Design, Fine Art, Film, Performing Arts, Music and Arts Education, or in a collaborative approach between different fields of research and studies. The output is presented within a context that may include aesthetic, epistemological, ethical, political, and social references.
