Student counselling aims to raise students' awareness of their attitudes, interests and abilities so that they can enjoy themselves in their studies. Self-study is a major part of university studies, and it is therefore important that students adopt good study habits right at the beginning of their studies.

EVALUATION OF PREVIOUS STUDIES
General
Applications for evaluation of previous university studies are only accepted from students who have been admitted to study at IUA.
An assessment of previous studies is applied for by filling out an electronic form below.
Applications for evaluation of previous studies are considered twice a school year, once a semester.
- Applications received before September 1st are usually processed by September 25th at the latest.
- Applications received before January 10 are usually processed by January 25 at the latest.
The assessment committee's decision is binding. If the student has comments on the assessment, he can request a reassessment or explanation to the evaluation committee, especially if new information or points of view are provided. Comments must be made within 10 days of the evaluation committee's decision.
Evaluation by departments
The student counsellor manages the evaluation of previous studies Each department is responsible for the evaluation in consultation with the student counsellor. The evaluation committee consists of the dean, the programme director of the relevant subject area together with the student counsellor. The head of teaching development can be called in for an evaluation. To promote consistency between departments, the evaluation is based on criteria below. The student counsellor receives applications and formally finalizes the results of the evaluation committees. The dean confirms the evaluation committee's decision with a signature on the evaluation sheet and sends it to the student counsellor who formally finalizes the evaluation and sends the result to the student.
Completion of applications
In order for the evaluation committee to process an application for an evaluation of a previous university program, the application must meet the following conditions:
- The courses that the student considers equivalent to his previous university studies must be specified.
- The application must state whether an application has previously been made for an assessment of the same courses atIUA or other schools. If so, the ruling of the previous assessment must accompany the application.
- Applicants are responsible for all of the above information appearing in the application so that it can be processed. If the application is not satisfactory, it will be refused on those grounds.
- Confirmed study history statements and course descriptions from the relevant university from the curriculum of the year in which the courses were taken must be included with the application.
- Curriculum data must be in Icelandic or English.
Processing applications
- Once the application has been processed, the student receives a notification by e-mail at the LHÍ e-mail address about the outcome of the assessment. The dean, the programme director and the department coordinator also receive a mail about the outcome of the assessment, and the department coordinator completes the registration accordingly to the student's academic record. Both the application and the result of the assessment are saved to the student's academic record.
Criteria for assessment
- Only university-level courses are evaluated from a recognized university. Generally, studies other than formal higher education are not allowed to be evaluated.
- The previous program is evaluated against an entire course, the number of credits (ECTS) must be the same or higher.
- If it is requested to have a compulsory course evaluated, the course must be fully comparable to a course that the applicant must take at IUA.
- To have the possibility of getting a course evaluated, they must have been completed in the last nine years or later.
- Final projects and/or final thesis are not evaluated.
- Students who start a master's program at IUA can only receive evaluated courses that they have completed at the master's level from an accredited university.
- A course that has previously been valid for a degree from another recognized university can be used for a degree at most once.
Registration of assessed studies in the curriculum system
- The student counsellor submits a summary document on the evaluated study to the department coordinator.
- The department coordinator records the assessed program in the school's curriculum system.
IUA can evaluate studies at bachelor's level up to 90 credits and up to 60 credits at master's level. This means that a student who graduates from IUA did not take less than half of his studies at the school.
Applicants for the evaluation of previous studies cannot assume that the application will be accepted, and it is therefore advised not to change the course registration until a result is available.
Academic accommodation in studies
It is important to apply for academic accommodation in studies in a timely manner so that teachers have time to process requests and can meet students in the best possible way.
- The fall application period is open from the beginning of the second to and including October 1st
- The spring application period is open from the beginning of the second to and including March 1
Students can apply for academic accommodation in their studies due to disabilities, specific learning disabilities, or chronic illness. The support aims to equalize status and opportunities for learning and in no way involves reducing learning requirements (students must always meet learning learning criteria and/or courses).
Student counselling oversees academic accommodation resources and offers personalized counselling and/or follow-up for students.
The condition for academic accommodation is that there is confirmation from an appropriate specialist of disability, specific learning disabilities or illness, including but not limited to, the following:
- Hearing loss and deafness
- Dyslexia and AD(H)D
- Tourette's and autism spectrum
- Movement disorders, whether long-term or temporary, for example due to illness or accident
- Chronic illness, such as cancer, rheumatism, MS, MND or mental disabilities.
Analyzes need to be from an accredited professional in the same field as the student's support needs lie. They need to be on an individual basis and group analyses are not accepted. Diagnoses must not be older than since the student was in the upper grades of elementary school. It should be noted that Davis analysis is not sufficient to receive specific support as it is not a diagnosis of specific learning disabilities.
Dyslexia
A student with dyslexia must present a diagnosis from a specialist using one of the following methods:
- GRP 14 diagnostic test (GRP 14H group analysis is not enough on its own)
- Aston Index Reading Analysis
- Logos dyslexia analysis
- ICD 10 diagnostic criteria (used by psychologists)
Applications for academic accommodation in studies
- The student starts by filling out an application for academic accommodation in studies
- The student also submits an analysis/certificate with the application
- Subsequently, the student books an appointment with the student counsellor
- The student counsellor evaluates the requests of students who apply for academic accommodation in their studies
- The student counsellor confirms to the Programme Director that the student is entitled to academic accommodation in studies, but it is the student's responsibility to contact the teacher/professional director about the implementation of support, for example increased time for project and exam submissions, reading assistance, assistance with academic writing, adaptation of the learning environment.
It is important to apply for academic accommodation in studies in a timely manner so that teachers have time to process requests and can meet students in the best possible way.
- The fall application period is open from the beginning of the second to and including October 1st
- The spring application period is open from the beginning of the second to and including March 1
You can apply for an exemption if an illness or accident occurs at other times. A medical certificate must always be submitted.
Those who struggle with disabilities that can be seen as temporary and can be worked with, cured or made more manageable, apply for special resources for each semester or for the school year. If the student's restrictions are permanent, the student applies for special resources at the beginning of the program and is registered with support for the duration of the study at IUA.
