This project examines ways to use video games in music education and whether elementary school children's interest in video games is useful to increase interest in music through a medium they know and use many for fun. It will also be investigated whether this approach can make it easier for teachers and students to approach improvisation and creativity.
Experiments were carried out at Fellaskóli in May 2021. The students were divided into four
groups of two The experiment was conducted three times with a weekly interval. Goal
the experiment is primarily to explore the possibility that video games can be used to teach free improvisation in musical contextsThe experiment involves video games being used like graphic notation by getting students to improvise a piece of music based on a video game played by another student The goal of the experiment is for students to engage in free musical improvisation with little admission or instruction The participants' performance and attitudes were investigated through observation and a questionnaire also intended to examine whether there is evidence of students entering a flow state upon participation in.
