Regina Eik Orradóttir
Solo exhibition in Nafla
Opening September 25, 5 pm-7 pm
—————
My recent oil paintings explore the intimacy inherent in everyday moments of platonic connection Each piece begins with a simple act that reveals something fundamental to the relationship, whether it's sisters chatting while knitting or friends leaning together over a meal.
Set up in candle-lit spaces, these works draw inspiration from Baroque art, where darkness and contrast amplify the atmosphere and transform everyday moments into experiences that become profound The glow focuses attention on subtle details such as outstretched hands, laughter, or focused listening that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Although the portraits of the Baroque period have often emphasized grandeur and drama, I aim to bring this traditional form into a modern perspective by using light and shadow to frame intimate and sincere communication My paintings deal no less with the loving connections I have with my subjects than with the process itself, where the art of painting becomes as meaningful as the finished work.

My recent oil paintings explore the closeness of everyday moments shared in platonic friendships or through sibling connections. Each work begins with a simple activity that experiences something essential about a relationship, where it's sisters chatting while knitting or friends leading in over a meal.
Staged in candlelit rooms, these scenes draw inspiration from Baroque paintings, where darkness and illumination righten the atmosphere and transform ordinary moments into ones that feel profound. The glow draws attention to subtle details such as hands reaching, laugh, or attentive listening that might otherwise pass unnoticed.
While Baroque portrait often emphasized grandeur and drama, I aim to bring a modern perspective to this tradition by using its light and contrast to frame intimate, authentic exchanges. My paintings are as much about the loving and trusting relationships I share with my subjects as they are about the portrait-making process themselves, where the act of painting becomes as meaningful as the finished work.
