New Environments
Welcome to New Environments, an exhibition presenting the final projects of students graduating from the MA Design and New Environments program at Iceland University of the Arts.
New Environments refers to social, environmental, and technological challenges that call for situated and context responsive approaches to design. Through field research and close engagement with communities, landscapes, and specific conditions, students have developed independent design practices in which critical thinking, research, and creative exploration generate new perspectives and possibilities.
The projects are diverse in both subject matter and scale. Working with local materials and environments can give rise to new ways of working in which technology and craft meet in unexpected ways; other projects focus on waste and overlooked materials as potential resources. Some propose publications that reawaken our relationship with the environment beyond the constant stamp of technology and the information society, while others shape includes practices that foster practices that foster care and sensitivity within the social sphere.
The exhibition features prototypes, interactive installations, collaborative projects developed with communities and institutions, and narrative design works implemented by reflective texts that situate the projects and invite further reading and conversation.
