The Iceland Academy of the Arts has dedicated itself to being a driving force in an ever-changing world and at the forefront of equality issues in Iceland and the current university community, both ideologically and in practice. A school for all is one of the main goals of LHÍ's policy. The policy emphasizes diversity and that the school's learning and working environment is characterized by validation and equality. Within the school, no difference can be made between people based on factors that distinguish them, and all must have equal opportunities to grow stronger in studies and work in the spirit of equality and inclusion.
Role and responsibilities
The Equality Committee of the Iceland Academy of the Arts oversees equality issues within the school and works on behalf of the Rector.
The Equality Committee formulates the school's policies and programs in matters of equality, diversity and inclusion The Equality Committee is a leader in the lively debate on equality issues, and the committee's visibility is an important part of cultivating and nurturing a culture where equality, diversity and inclusion are celebrated.
The Equality Committee monitors the state of equality issues within and outside the school, has an overview of equality laws and government regulations and ensures that the equality debate within the school is in line with the ever-changing contemporary world.
The Equality Commission is responsible for the creation, implementation and updating of the Equality Plan In addition, the Committee provides support to each Department, Support Services and Student Council in establishing an action plan for the enforcement of the Equality Plan.
The Equality Committee participates in the annual Universities' Equality Days with events inside and outside the school.

Committee structure and arrangements
Í the Equality Committee consists of five representatives and they represent equality issues within the school.
The committee is appointed in the following way:
There are three staff representatives and they are appointed by the Executive Council, which advertises for candidates to sit on the committee. When selecting representatives, it must be considered that the committee reflects the diversity of the school community as best as possible. Staff representatives are appointed for a minimum of two years at a time, and at least one representative from the previous year shall sit on the committee in order to ensure continuity in the committee's work between school years.
The Student Council appoints one student representative who serves a minimum of one year on the committee.
In addition, the school's equality representative sits on the committee and is appointed indefinitely.
The Equality Committee shall be fully formed in the spring for the coming school year, and it meets for the first meeting within a month of the start of school activities At that meeting, the committee elects a chairman who directs and organizes the work of the committee and convenes meetings The Equality Committee normally meets once a month during the school year.
The Equality Committee is authorized to acquire external knowledge every year.
The equality representative of the Iceland Academy of the Arts is appointed by the rector. The equality representative works closely with all departments and departments of the school, sits on the equality committee, follows up on the progress of the equality plan and, together with the chairman of the committee, represents the equality committee in matters submitted to the executive council.
The equality representative must ensure that the equality plan is accessible to staff and students and is visible on the school's website.
The Equality Officer collects and publishes information annually on the progress of the actions of the equality plan as well as the status of accreditation issues within the University of the Arts in general.
The equality representative receives suggestions, proposals and complaints that are sent to the equality committee and is responsible for their formal consideration at the meeting of the equality committee.
The equality representative sits on the consultation forum of the universities' equality representatives, where work is being done on joint projects.
LHÍ's equality representative is Katla Stefánsdóttir, a disability specialist.
The equality plan is normally reviewed every three years, but annually the committee reviews the plan's actions, evaluates results, formulates new actions and, if necessary, reviews it. Review shall be initiated at least one year before the current plan expires with the aim that a new plan is ready when the previous one expires.
The Equality Committee is authorized to establish a working group on the plan and its review if necessary. The committee is also authorized to consult the staff of the University of the Arts and external experts for advice and opinion if deemed necessary.
Changes to the plan require the approval of the Executive Council of the University of the Arts.
The equality program covers all staff and all students of the University of the Arts who together are responsible for preventing discrimination and contributing to creating a society of inclusion and equality.
