Magnus Pálsson (b. 1929) has created a life's work in his career that expands the boundaries of art in diverse ways, in the form of sculpture, sound art, performances, video art, book works and teaching. He is one of the most influential advocates of interdisciplinary art in Iceland in the second half of the twentieth century and had strong connections with the international movement of Fluxus artists. Magnús encouraged Icelandic artists to draw inspiration from their own cultural experiences and also contributed to international cooperation, with the aim of breaking the cultural isolation of Icelandic art from the rest of the world. When looking over his diverse career, it becomes obvious that Magnús's methods are not only based on experimental activities, interdisciplinary work practices and international cooperation, but also on underlining the role of art in everyday life, which together form a coherent philosophy of art where everything is possible.

 

Adam Buffington is a sound artist and musicologist working on the border between scholarship and artistic practice He specializes in contemporary art and music in Iceland, as well as Fluxus and art development in the latter half of the 20th century, with research focuses on interdisciplinary creation, international collaboration, storytelling and aesthetics.

His research has appeared in Art in Iceland, Current Musicology and Artzine.is, in addition to which he has presented papers at conferences such as the American Musicological Society and the Society for the Advancement of Scandinavian Study, as well as at Myrkir músikdagar (2025), the Iceland Academy of the Arts and the Hartt School of Music As a close associate of Magnús Pálsson, Buffington works as editor and lead author of a comprehensive essay on Magnús Pálsson's life's work, which is scheduled to be published in the fall of 2026.

Buffington is also a co-founder Mumbling Eye, an independent publishing company that specializes in rare and unreleased Icelandic sound art, together with the visual artist Tuma Magnússon. Mumbling Eye has published Gapassipi and No one Swallows the Sun, two sound installations by Magnús Pálsson, which have been discussed in I Care If You Listen, Medium, Bridge and Scandinavian Studies, in addition to having been played on Resonance FM (London), Montez Press Radio (New York), RÚV (Reykjavík) and Helsinki Open Waves (Helsinki). Next project Mumbling Eye is a version of audio poems by Ástu Fanney Sigurðardóttir on vinyl record, which will be released in 2025.
Buffington received her PhD in historical musicology from Ohio State University in 2020 and lives in Reykjavík.

Alongside visual artist Tumi Magnússon, Buffington is the co-founder of Mumbling Eye, an independent record label dedicated to the publication of rare and unreleased Icelandic sound art. Mumbling Eye's releases Gapassipi and Engin Gleypir Sólina (both sound installations by Pálsson) have been featured in I Care If You Listen, Medium, Bridge, and Scandinavian Studies, and have been broadcast by Resonance FM (London, UK), Montez Press Radio (New York City, USA), RÚV (Reykjavik, Iceland) and Helsinki Open Waves (Helsinki, Finland), among others.
