The formal opening of Open LHÍ was celebrated in the building of the Iceland University of the Arts in Stakkahlíð 1 on March 5. Open LHÍ is the school's new and exciting platform to open art studies for the public and promote the retraining of professionals in art, design, architecture and art education.

The goal of Open LHÍ is twofold On the one hand, it is a platform for lifelong learning, professional development and networking for working arts and professionals. On the other hand, the aim is to spark public interest in the arts and provide the widest possible group with access to the expertise and facilities of the University of the Arts.

Kristín Eysteinsdóttir, rector of the University of the Arts, welcomed the guests and Oliver Rähni, a student in the department of music, played a piano solo on the occasion of the opening.

“ It is a long-awaited dream that the Open University of the Arts take off We want to open the door for those interested of all ages by offering a wide range of courses in the fields of art and culture and I believe that this is how we make our society richer. Also, we intend to offer courses to professionals in the arts that deepen their specialization and competence. We are full of anticipation and look forward to welcoming as many people as possible.”, said Kristín Eysteinsdóttir, rector of the University of the Arts in her speech on this occasion.

The first courses started

The first courses have already started and we can mention a very successful course in collaboration with Borgarleichúsið in connection with the exhibition “ This is Laddiantun where Edda Björgvins educated the participants about humor and its many aspects and purpose. The participants learned about Ladda, one of the most famous comedians in the country and subsequently went on the flow of the exhibition Continuing cooperation with Borgarleichúsið, as well as other cultural institutions are expected.

Open LHÍ's course offerings are constantly evolving and are based on conversation with professional associations in the arts and culture sector as well as being useful to the great and diverse human capital which Academy of Artsinn possesses.

Opni LHÍ will offer about twenty courses in the spring semester of 2025, and the aim is to further strengthen the cooperation with professional associations and former students of the school.
