New toilet markings in LHÍ - increased access and clearer information

In recent weeks, work has been underway to renew the markings on the toilets in the premises of the Iceland Academy of the Arts, with the aim of improving access for everyone. A new symbol of gender-neutral spaces has been added to older symbols, and gender-neutral toilets are now marked with it alongside other spaces.

The symbol was designed by Huga Þey Gunnarsson and won first prize in a competition organized by Samtokin ’78, the Association of Icelandic Illustrators (FÍT) and the Center for Design and Architecture. It is nice to report that Hugi is a former student at the Iceland Academy of the Arts. The competition was held on the occasion of five years since the adoption of the law on sexual autonomy in Iceland. The symbol was publicly presented at Design March 2025.

With new markings, LHÍ wants to promote increased access, clarity and safety for all users of the school's premises.

In recent weeks, the Iceland University of the Arts has been updating restroom signage across its facilities with the aim of improving accessibility for everyone. A new gender-neutral symbol has been added alongside existing signage, and gender-neutral restrooms are now marked accordingly.

The symbol was designed by Hugi Þeyr Gunnarsson and won first prize in a competition organized by the ’78 Association, the Icelandic Illustrators Association (FÍT), and the Center for Design and Architecture. Notably, Hugi is a former student of the Iceland University of the Arts. The competition was held to mark the fifth anniversary of the Gender Autonomy Act in Iceland, and the symbol was originally introduced at DesignMarch 2025.

With these updated signs, the university aims to enhance accessibility, clarity, and safety for everyone using its facilities.
