Gréta Kristín Ómarsdóttir has been appointed to the position of adjunct professor at the Faculty of Performing Arts and she will play the role of professional director of the department's authors' program.
Gréta Kristín Ómarsdóttir (1990) graduated with a BA degree in Theatre and performance making from Iceland University of the Arts in 2016 and an MA degree in Directing from the University of the Arts in Helsinki’s Theatre Academy in 2023. Her prior studies include Comparative Literature and Gender studies at the University of Iceland. Gréta has worked professionally in the performing arts field since 2016, as a dramaturg and an artistic advisor and has directed works in most performing arts institutions in Iceland and independently as a founding member and producer of the company Stertabenda (eng: Perplex). Recent directing works are Góðan daginn, faggi (Good morning, faggi) at The National Theatre of Iceland, the drag-opera Die Schöne Müllerin at Tjarnarbíó, Bæng! by Marius Von Mayenburg at Reykjavík City Theatre and Insomnia by Amalie Olesen at The National Theatre. She will direct And Björk of course by Þorvaldur Þorsteinsson at Akureyri Theatre in the season 23-24. Gréta was awarded Newcomer of the year at Gríman, the Icelandic Performing Arts Awards in 2017, nominated Director of the year for Stertabenda that same year and again for Bæng! in 2019. In 2020-2023 Gréta was the artistic director of Þjóðleikhúskjallarinn and Loftið at The National Theatre of Iceland, where she emphasized proactive programming for access and inclusion of marginalized people and performing art forms. Gréta has been a lecturer at LHÍ since 2017 and has developed courses and material for gender and queer criticism along with mentoring thesis work and teaching postdramatic theory and new writing.
