Specific support in studies due to additional needs

It is important to apply for specific support in a timely manner so that teachers have time to process requests and can meet students in the best possible way.

  • The spring application period is open from the beginning of the second to and including March 1
  • The fall application period is open from the beginning of the second to and including October 1st

You can apply for an exemption if an illness or accident occurs at other times. A medical certificate must always be submitted.

A student can apply for study resources for additional needs, submit a certificate/analysis from accredited professionals. The resources aim to equalize facilities and opportunities for study that in no way involve reducing learning requirements (students must always meet the learning criteria of the study and/or course).

A condition for resources is that there is confirmation from an appropriate specialist of disability, inhibition or special needs. Special needs include specific learning disabilities or illness.

Study counseling oversees resources and offers personal counseling and/or follow-up for students with disabilities or specific learning disabilities.

Resources apply, among other things:

  • Visual impairment, blindness/legal blindness
  • Hearing loss, deafness
  • Specific learning disabilities, such as dyslexia
  • AD(H)D, tourette, autism spectrum
  • Mobility impairment, such as disabilities or temporary mobility impairment due to an accident
  • Chronic illness, such as cancer, rheumatism, MS, MND or mental disabilities.

Dyslexia diagnosis:

The student must present an analysis from an expert using one of the following methods:

  • GRP 14 diagnostic test (GRP 14H group analysis is not enough on its own)
  • Aston Index Reading Analysis
  • Logos dyslexia analysis
  • ICD 10 diagnostic criteria (used by psychologists)

Analyzes must be from an accredited professional in the same field as the inhibition the student is struggling with Diagnoses must be on an individual basis and group analyses are not accepted. Diagnoses must not be older than since a person was in the upper grades of elementary school.

It should be noted that Davis analysis is not sufficient to obtain resources as it is not a diagnosis of specific learning disabilities.

Applications for specific support in studies due to additional needs

  • The student starts by filling out an application for specific support due to additional needs in studies
  • The student also submits an analysis/certificate with the application
  • Subsequently, the student books an appointment with a study advisor
  • A study counselor evaluates the requests of students who apply for specific support
  • The study advisor confirms to the subject manager that the student has the right to specific support in studies, but it is the student's responsibility to contact the teacher/professional director about the implementation of support, for example increased time for project and exam submissions, reading assistance, assistance with academic writing, adaptation of the learning environment.

Those who struggle with inhibitions that can be seen as temporary and can be worked with, cured or made more manageable, apply for specific support for each semester or for the school year. If the student's restrictions are permanent, the student applies for specific support at the beginning of the program and is registered with support for the duration of the study at LHÍ.

Scope regarding project submissions and tests:

A student has the right to flexibility in assignments and exams if there is a confirmed diagnosis/certificate of specific learning disabilities. It is the teacher's decision in conversation with the student how much scope is given.

It is important to apply for resources for additional needs in time or before classes begin so that teachers have time to process requests and meet students in the best possible way.

Speech synthesis:

Students with dyslexia and anyone who cannot use printed language have access to speech synthesis The audio library. The synthesizer is free of charge to students.

What needs to be done:

The person must be registered with the Audio Library of Iceland, hbs.is which sends confirmation regarding analysis to the Blindrafélag. The student will then be sent a link for downloading a speech synthesizer and a key for voices. Inquiries regarding speech synthesis will be sent to the reception of@blind.is

Speech synthesis in Canvas:

Í Canvas each course's learning management website is a configured speech synthesizer that students can use to help themselves. A button appears in the top right corner of each course marked Accessible Reading Environment/Immersive reader.

Atlas Primer is a speech server that is intended to make the learning environment more flexible. More information can be found at Atlas Primer (https://www.atlasprimer.com/).

Á The smart web can you find information, technical opportunities and smart device (https://www.snjallvefjan.is/).

With Natural Reader you can convert text, PDF documents and other templates into spoken language (https://www.naturalreaders.com/).

Curriculum in computerized form:
