The RIFF International Film Festival starts on September 26, but the festival occupies a permanent place in Icelandic cultural life and is one of the manifestations of the great power that resides in film culture in Iceland. The program puts young filmmakers and progressive filmmaking at the forefront, and this year a large group of students from the LHÍ Film Arts Department will participate in the festival. Erlendur Sveinsson, director and screenwriter of the festival's opening film 1000 words but Erlendur is a professional director and assistant professor at the Faculty of Cinematic Arts.

1000 words

The musicians Briet and Birnir are familiar to most people, but they brought their horses together with the release of a new album at the beginning of the summer entitled 1000 words. The short film of the same name has emerged from the album and was made in collaboration with Icelandair and the production company Sensor. As mentioned, Erlendur Sveinsson was in charge of the direction and script of the film, which has been chosen as one of the two opening films of this year's RIFF festival.

„I enjoy working with musicians a lot to create a visual world around their music. The music always grows when you have a strong visual world connected to it and this form is so incredibly free“, says Erlendur in a review regarding the release of the film this summer.

Erlendur has a diverse career behind him in filmmaking. He has directed dozens of music videos for a large number of musicians in Iceland, but his music video for Ásgeir Trausta's song was nominated for an award Camera Image festival in Poland There are many things ahead for Erlendi but on his short film Moon Pie Vanilla was shown at the Nordisk Panorama Film Festival recently.

Vigdís, Konráð and Salvör are studying in their third year at the Faculty of Cinematic Arts at LHÍ, while Elizabeth, Úlfur and Brynjar are students in their second year. Brúsi Ólason is a lecturer at the department.

The program council for the young people together consists of thirteen young people who, in the run-up to the festival, choose several films that will adorn the program of this year's festival.
