About the project

Stafrún is a new script for runes in digital form This project was born at the question: What if runes had been allowed to develop unhindered? Runes are the oldest written language of the Germanic language and arrived in Iceland with settlers Although the Latin alphabet took over after the conversion to Christianity and the Reformation, the runes lived on in Iceland longer than elsewhere in Europe and developed into special Icelandic runes The font is based on „the new Icelandic runes“, as described in the book Icelandic runes - 1000 years of history.

Stafrún is a new digital font for the Icelandic runes. This project was born from the question: What if runes had been allowed to develop unhindered? Runes are the oldest written language of the Germanic language and were broken to Iceland by settlers. Although the Latin alphabet took over after Christianization, the runes survived in Iceland longer than elsewhere in Europe and developed into Icelandic runes. The font is based on the “ Icelandic runes” as described in the book Icelandic Runes: A 1000-year history.
