BA Instrumental Composition

Styrmir Þeyr began studying piano at Dalvíkurbyggðar's Music School at the age of 6 under the guidance of Helga Bryndís Magnúsdóttir, but was then with Páli Barna Szabó for the longest time. At the age of sixteen, Styrmir began his studies in creative music at the Music School in Akureyri, a study path at secondary school in collaboration with the Akureyri High Schools. He sat there with various subjects related to recording technology, sound processing, songwriting, etc. and sat private lessons with both Hauk Pálmasyn and Kristján Edelstein. Along with creative music, Styrmir dipped his toes in rhythmic instrument performance and studied their respective years with Ludwig Kára Forberg and Phil Doyle. In the winter of 2021-2, Styrmir Þeyr concentrated on classical playing and completed his advanced degree with the help of his then piano teacher, Þórarin Stefánsson. 

In the fall of 2022, Styrmir was admitted to instrumental compositions at the Iceland Academy of the Arts and has studied there for the last three years under the guidance of Einar Torfa Einarsson. He has also been their student Peter Maté and Edda Erlendsdóttir in continuing piano studies. Styrmir has participated in various projects organized by the school, including two international projects; on the one hand, a visit to Sweden and Finland with the piano department of the University of the Arts and on the other hand a joint project with the Conservatorio C. Monteverdi in Bolzano, Italy. In the latter, Styrmir participated as both composer and performer, where orchestral works by the composition students of the two schools were performed in concerts by Edward Grike in various events in Iceland as well as a member of orchestras that have performed on television, Músíktilraun and smaller concert events in Akureyri. He then performed the piano concert at the A-mok Concert by Edward Gri Clarke at the Akureyri Concert.

Nykurin and Smalapilturinn

Nykurin and Smalapilturinn is a tone poem based on an Icelandic folktale that tells of the events of a boy who unfortunately comes across a nykur In the music, you can hear various motifs that take on the symbolism of phenomena are appearing in the legend The work is based on these motifs and their differences, the tension between the boy and the nykur, the innocent and the devilish, is there in the foreground. Lets the shepherd and falls prey to the nyk? Or does he return home happy?
