Smit:
Ef upp kemur covid-19 smit hjá nemenda eða starfsmanni skal láta framkvæmdarstjóra skólana Hauk Björnsson haukurbjornsson [at] lhi.is tafarlaust vita. Í því tilfelli verður viðbragðsáætlun skólans um smit virkjuð.

Here below you will find practical information on teaching, hygiene measures and access to IUA‘s buildings according to current rules on disease prevention measures.
This is based on the Minister of Health’s announcement about current restrictions in effect during ban on gatherings, as well as instructions from the Ministry of Education about how universities should operate during this time. Great emphasis is on not limiting the university’s activities beyond what is required by authorities. If there is not an increase in Covid-19 infections in the coming weeks, there is hope that these restrictions might be eased. That will be announced as soon as any changes occur.
The current rules on disease prevention measures aim at allowing universities to stay open long-term, while operating as normal to the possible extent. Without these rules, the universities would only be able to offer distance learning. They reduce the effect it would have on our activities, should a Covid-19 infection come up within the university. It is therefore in our favour as a community, that we all follow the rules. Should they be broken, it might lead to a major disruption in teaching.
As the authorities give out rules that are valid for a limited time period, it is impossible to make an extensive plan for a longer period of time. This work is aimed at being ready for changes, we  hope that there will be no major disruptions, especially compared to closing of universities last spring.
Start of the academic year:
Teaching starts according to plan on Monday 24 August. That same day there will be an orientation day for newcomers. Please see the schedule for this in a separate e-mail.
Compartments:
IUA’s buildings have been divided into eight compartments which each has its own entrance. The number of people in each compartment cannot exceed 100. This division into compartments will be valid from Monday morning at 6:00 am. On the Laugarnes campus there are three compartments, four in Þverholt and in Skipholt there will be only one. IUA’s spaces in Austurstræti will be part of one of the compartments in Laugarnes. In each compartment there are lavatories and we are working on spaces available for eating within the compartments.
Students are under no circumstances allowed to enter another compartment than their own. Staff are allowed only in exceptional cases to go between compartments. This applies only to teachers that teach in more than one compartment, service coordinators, IT staff, janitorial services and others that must go between compartments to fulfil their duties. In these exceptional cases, hygiene measures must be in place, such as washing and disinfecting hands and all surfaces that are touched, as well as keeping a two-meter distance from other people.
The compartments will be clearly marked by the entrances. In some cases, the compartments will be separated by tape on the floor. In these cases, the tape should be interpreted as walls that cannot be crossed.
Students can find their compartments in this table.
Please note that third year bachelor students in music and master students in music (not first year students in vocal/instrumental education) start the semester with distance learning. We are working towards starting on-campus teaching for this group as soon as possible.
Common teaching areas:
A few teaching areas at the IUA are not part of any specific compartment. This applies to most workshops as well as the lecture halls in Þverholt (basement). Only individuals from the same compartment can enter these common areas at the same time. Students and staff have to disinfect surfaces that have been touched before and after use. A new group cannot enter the room until the previous group has disinfected and left the space. Equipment for disinfecting will be available in all common areas.

Public areas:
In some cases (mostly in Þverholt) individuals from different compartments might have to walk through public areas to get to and from their compartments/common teaching areas. This applies for example to the foyer and stairwells. These spaces are only meant for walking through and it is under no circumstances allowed to stop or wait in these spacesGathering in groups in these spaces is strictly forbidden.

Rules about social distancing and common surfaces:
Within the university there will be a one-meter social distancing rule instead of the 2-meter rule that is generally used in Iceland. The IUA has been granted an exemption, allowing students and teachers to be within one-meter proximity of each other, during practical training and workshop activities, provided that masks are used. Touching common surfaces will be allowed, for example while using equipment and tools, provided that protective gloves are used. IUA provides protective masks and gloves where applicable.
IUA’s janitorial services make sure that common surfaces are cleaned on a daily basis.
General hygiene measures:
All students and staff shall follow the general rules and instructions regarding hygiene and disease prevention measures.
Students, teachers and other staff members shall not enter the university if they:
  • Are in quarantine
  • Are in isolation (also while waiting for results from a Covid-19 test)
  • Are within 14 days of having been declared healthy, after being in isolation as a result of a Covid-19 infection.
  • Have symptoms: flu-like symptoms, cough, fever, headache, aches in bones and muscles, and tiredness.
Please make sure to read and follow the instructions and signs that will be put up in IUA’s buildings. All information about Covid-19 and hygiene measures may be found on www.covid.is.
Rules on attendance:
University rules have been temporarily changed, meaning that mandatory attendance will not be in place during this period of restrictions. Students are however responsible for their participation and study progress. This is done to create flexibility for students who have flu-like symptoms, are in quarantine or isolation, and those in high-risk groups. Please participate in on-campus teaching unless you have valid reasons not to, as absence from class can negatively affect the teaching and your classmates.
We are working on making teaching materials, including recordings from lectures, available online. Streaming equipment is being set up in some classrooms. Please note however that some part of teaching is very hard to mediate in an online format, so absence from class can have a considerable effect on students’ experiences and progress.
Part-time lecturers and guests:
Visits from guests into compartments must be limited. Guests and part-time lecturers shall practice hygiene measures, such as washing and disinfecting hands and all surfaces that are touched, as well as keeping a two-meter distance from other people if possible.
University office and student services:
If students or staff members need to contact departmental coordinators, student counselling services, service coordinators, reception staff or other staff members, this should happen via phone or e-mail. An exception to this is when staff members are part of the same compartments.
Events:
At the moment the IUA will not have any events unless they are directly part of teaching and planned according to current rules on disease prevention measures.
Library:
The IUA library in Þverholt and Laugarnes follow general rules on disease prevention measures, which are in place for all libraries in Iceland. Further information on this can be found in the libraries themselves. Students and staff are asked to contact the libraries via phone or e-mail when possible.
Infection:
If a Covid-19 infection comes up with a student or staff member, please let the managing director Haukur Björnsson via email haukurbjornsson [at] lhi.is know without delay. In this case the university’s contingency plan for infections will be activated.
