Sunneva Ása Weisshappel MA Fine Art student opens an exhibiton: Odd Girl Out at the Robilant+Voena art gallery in Manhattan next Friday September 15th.
Sunneva is an Icelandic artist whose work interrogates the multifaceted nature of the human experience. Born in 1989, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Iceland University of the Arts in 2013. Currently, she is pursuing a joint MFA in Fine Arts at the Goldsmith University in London and the Iceland University of the Arts. In her work, she draws upon her own experiences to challenge herself and her audiences.
This exhibition explores the uncomfortable side of female relationships, especially those experienced in girlhood. The themes in the show take inspiration from the book ‘Odd Girl Out’ by Rachel Simmons; these include covert bullying and social alienation.
Based on her own experiences as a teenager in the early 2000s, Sunneva’s works are imbued with a bitter nostalgia. She uses materials such as denim, chains and lace, as well as found objects such as Barbie dolls and fake nails to convey the angst of female adolescence, evoking the subtle hierarchies of friendship circles and the desperate desire to fit in.
