In that context, concepts such as statics and the theory of self-determination are presented, as well as trauma and risk behavior among young people. However, research on the effects of art on welfare is used and art therapy is discussed and an open workshop The research of the thesis is based on a qualitative interview study, but data was collected through semi-open interviews with four directors of treatment homes run by the Children's and Family Clinic.

The main findings of the study suggest that despite certain challenges, there is a clear will and foundation for the use of art in therapeutic work for youth An interest-based approach and flexibility in work seems to contribute to increased participation and activity in the clients of the treatment homes The results suggest that art has a real and visible effect on their well-being and behavior.

In addition, it seems that artistic creation can create space for the processing of emotions, increase self-confidence and promote mindfulness In light of the results, it can be concluded that art can be used as a constructive tool in therapeutic work for young people, but that it depends on the organization, circumstances and professional framework of the work. In order to further promote the use of art in the work, there seems to be a need for targeted strategic planning, increased professional knowledge and better access to diverse art forms.

Supervisors: Kristín Valsdóttir and Martin Bruss Smedlund
30 ECTS Arts and Welfare
2026

Ásdís Birna Gylfadóttir is an artist by training.
