J\u00fal\u00edus M\u00e1ni Sigur\u00f0sson was born in Reykjav\u00edk in 2001. He started learning the clarinet in the School Orchestra of Vesturb\u00e6r and Mi\u00f0b\u00e6r at the age of 8. Later he studied at Sigursvein's Music School, where his teachers included Gr\u00edmur Helgason and Gu\u00f0ni Franzson. In 2018 he joined the ranks of the Choir of the High School at Hamrahl\u00ed\u00f0, which sparked his interest in choral music, and he has been in choir ever since, for the longest time in Hallgr\u00edmskirkja Choir and Huldi Chamber Choir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

J\u00fal\u00edus began studying instrumental composition at the Iceland Academy of the Arts in 2022. At the University of the Arts, J\u00fal\u00edus has studied composition under the guidance of Hildigunn R\u00fanarsd\u00f3ttir, and Hr\u00f3\u00f0mar Inga Sigurbj\u00f6rnsson. He has also studied choral conducting, was a mentor and arranger at Uptaktin and participated in the Summer Concert in Sk\u00e1lholt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The compositional career began in Huldi's Chamber Choir, under the direction of Hrei\u00f0ar Inga \u00deorsteinsson, which emphasizes new compositions for choir. The choir performed works by J\u00fal\u00edus, and other members of the choir, at the European Youth Choir Festival in Basel in the summer of 2025. In the spring of 2026, Huldur will release a record, which will include J\u00fal\u00edus' compositions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brak <\/em>is Julius' final project from the Academy of Arts, composed over a period of several months in 2025. In the work you can hear influences from various sources, for example J\u00f3n Nordal, Igor Stravinsky, J\u00f3n Leifs and Charles Koechlin. The work can be described as a smooth surface of water, which is disturbed by a drop that breaks the water and ripples it, until the water recalculates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
