An online program is organized by the Student Services and the International Office which includes introductory meeting and introduction to services IUA provides during the study placement. A campus tour for our different camps and a morning coffee reception. We encourage all new students to take part in these activities which serve as a platform for students to meet each other and a tool towards adaptation.<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-lg-12\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><strong>Accommodation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div>\n<div>Student accommodation is not provided at the IUA. Most students find rooms\/apartments with private landlords in the city or through rental services. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/803480680281630\">Facebook group<\/a> is set up for students to exchange information about housing. Housing can typically be found on the Igloo rental platform via their <a href=\"https:\/\/myigloo.is\">website<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/is\/app\/myigloo\/id6447498935\">iPhone<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=is.myigloo\">Android<\/a> app. There are numerous Facebook groups with thousands of members active seeking or offering housing, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/leiga\/\">this ons<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/760451174069738\/\">this one<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/810385915715839\/\">this one<\/a>. It is crucial to exercise caution when searching for apartments online and to avoid transfer any meetings until you have verified the legitimacy of the lease.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h3><strong>Housing benefits<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div>Students may be entitled to housing benefits. Applicants must have a social identification number, have a registered legal address in Iceland, and have a legally registered rental agreement for a minimum of three months. Further information on eligibility and access to the application portal can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/island.is\/en\/housing-benefits\/conditions\">here<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h3><strong>Cost of Living<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div>It is important to keep in mind that Iceland is expensive and you have to consider your budget for living expenses. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skra.is\/folk\/flutningur\/flutningur-til-islands\/ees-efta-rikisborgarar\/dvol-lengur-en-6-manudir\/lagmarksframfaersluskilyrdi\/\">published minimum-support criterion<\/a> of the Welfare Division of Reykjav\u00edk City is approximately ISK 245,000 per month for an individual. However, this amount does not necessarily reflect actual living costs, which can be very great dependent on your lifestyle and spending habits.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>Here are rough estimates for an individual living in Reykjav\u00edk:<\/div>\n<div class=\"rteindent1\">Housing, including utilities: ISK 130,000\/month and up<\/div>\n<div class=\"rteindent1\">Food and daily expenses: ISK 56,000\/month and up<\/div>\n<div class=\"rteindent1\">Local public transportation: ISK 6,000\/month and up<\/div>\n<div class=\"rteindent1\">Leisure activities: ISK 30,000\/month and up<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-lg-12\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div>\n<div>\n<h2><strong>Registration and Student Residence Permits<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><strong>Citizens from EU\/EEA\/EFTA<\/strong>\u00a0countries do not need to obtain a student residence permit to study in Iceland. <strong>Full-time students staying in Iceland for longer than six months<\/strong>, should register with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/skra.is\/english\/individuals\/moving-to-iceland\/i-am-an-eea-efta-citizen\/i-am-a-student\/\">Registers Iceland<\/a>. Through this application (A-271 (EU-nationals\/A-257 Nordic nationals) you will receive an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skra.is\/english\/individuals\/me-and-my-family\/my-registration\/id-numbers\/\">Icelandic ID number<\/a> \u201eidentification number\u201c.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Exchange students staying for less than 6 months<\/strong>, are not required to register their legal address in Iceland. Should you need to obstain an Icelandic ID number (eg in terms of employment), you can obtain a System ID number through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsk.is\/english\/individuals\/\">Iceland Revenue and Customs<\/a> (through application form RSK 3.30).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Citizens of countries outside the EU\/EEA\/EFTA<\/strong>\u00a0area must apply for a residence permit in Iceland if they intend to stay longer than 90 days. This documents also to Erasmus students who do not hold an EU\/EEA\/EFTA passport. A residence permit in another EU\/EEA country is not valid for a study period in Iceland serving 90 days.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>To ensure that a student residence permit is granted before the start of the semester, <strong>students are responsible for checking the application dates set by the Directorate of Immigration and submission all required documents on time.  <\/strong>. Please note that obtaining a student residence permit can take considerable time and effort, so we urge you to read the information and instructions on the Directorate of Immigration's website carefully.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/island.is\/en\/residence-permit-students\">Directorate of Immigration<\/a><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"btn-holder animation\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skra.is\/english\/\" target=\"\" class=\"btn btn-lg btn-dark btn-with-arrow-right\">Register Iceland <\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-lg-12\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><strong>Financial Support<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div>The IUA does not offer scholarships but full-time international students can look into who they are eligible for support from the <a href=\"https:\/\/menntasjodur.is\/english\/\">Icelandic Student Loan Fund<\/a>.<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"btn-holder animation\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/menntasjodur.is\/the-icelandic-student-loan-fund\" target=\"\" class=\"btn btn-lg btn-dark btn-with-arrow-right\">Icelandic Student Loan Fund<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-lg-12\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><strong>Health Insurance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div>Everyone who has been legally resident in Iceland for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sjukra.is\/english\"><u>six months <\/u><\/a>automatically becomes a member of the Icelandic social insurance system, regardless of nationality.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Citizens of countries outside the EU\/EEA\/EFTA\u00a0<\/strong>are required to obtain private insurance during the time they are waiting to become health insured in the social insurance system. Please note! Students will only become legal residents once their resident permit has been found. For information on the exact day you become insured in the social insurance system, please contact <a class=\"spamspan\" href=\"mailto:international@sjukra.is\">international@sjukra.is<\/a> after you have received your resident permit card.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Citizens from EU\/EEA\/EFTA<\/strong>\u00a0countries are advised to apply for entering the social insurance system upon arrival. There are also late afternoon walk-in hours during weeks for those without an appointment.<\/div>\n<div>The medical service provider <a href=\"http:\/\/laeknavaktin.is\/\">The Medical Watch<\/a> operates outside opening hours, on weekends and public holidays. Tel. 1700 and 1770.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Dental services in Iceland are provided at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tannsi.is\/tannlaeknar\">private dental practices<\/a>. Dental Emergency Care is provided at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tannlaeknavaktin.is\/index.php\/in-english\">The Dental Watch<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div>Please note that dental services are not part of the public health insurance system.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The accident and emergency unit for accidents, acute illness, poisoning and serious injuries is located in Landssp\u00edtalinn University Hospital, Fossvogur. If you are planning to use the bus on a daily basis you can purchase a student bus card. Students who have obtained a \u201eID number\u201c can purchase a student card <a href=\"https:\/\/www.klappid.is\/\">here<\/a>. Their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.klappid.is\/en\/buy-tickets\/klappid-app\">Clap app<\/a> offers real-time locations of bus routes, travel itineraries and more.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><strong>Electric scooters<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>One of the more popular ways to get around is by way of electric scooters. At least two companies in Iceland offer electric scooter apps: <a href=\"https:\/\/hopp.bike\">Hop<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bolt.eu\/en-is\/scooters\/\">Bolt<\/a>. Be mindful of the <a href=\"https:\/\/island.is\/en\/electric-scooter-wheels\">rules and regulations<\/a> for electric scooters as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/grapevine.is\/mag\/2024\/09\/13\/dont-block-the-street-with-an-e-scooter-please\/\">proper parking etiquette<\/a>. In wintertime, take extra preparations when riding in icy conditions as accidents are <a href=\"https:\/\/grapevine.is\/news\/2021\/11\/16\/increase-of-injuries-among-young-scooter-drivers\/\">quote common<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><strong>Bicycles<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>A healthy and cheap option to get around and explore Reykjav\u00edk and its surroundings is by bicycle. You can sometimes get bikes at a great bargain at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EfnismidlunBreidhella\">Sorpa's Content sharing<\/a> in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur. Used bikes are also kind on not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/134814727383577\/\">one<\/a>, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/1275535665875009\/\">two<\/a> different Facebook groups as well as Facebook Marketplace. If you feel like exploring, fun and interesting bike routes can be found on apps like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.strava.com\">Strava<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trailforks.com\">Trailforks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><b>Getting around Iceland<\/b><\/div>\n<div>Before setting out to explore Iceland, it's important to be aware that weather and road conditions can change rapidly moments within hours. This is particularly crucial during the winter months, when conditions can be highly unpredictable.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>We strongly advise checking both weather forecasts and road conditions before embracing on any journey, especially into rural or remote areas. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, we highly recommend downloading the <a href=\"https:\/\/safetravel.is\"><strong>SafeTravel App<\/strong><\/a>, provided by the Icelandic authorities. The app is updated continuous 24 hours a day, 365 days a yearand offers reliable alerts on road closures, weather warnings, and other essential travel information.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-lg-12\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><strong>Learning Icelandic<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>At the Iceland University of the Arts, the main language of construction at the BA level is Icelandic, while all MA studies are concluded in English (except Arts Education and Vocal\/Instrumental Education). Though you will find that you can quite easily get away with speaking English in Iceland, we encourage you to learn our language as a part of your experience of living in Iceland.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Autumn &amp; spring semester university courses in Icelandic culture &amp; language<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The IUA offers courses in Icelandic culture and language at the beginning of autumn and spring semesters. The courses are compulsory for exchange students and optional for full-time international students. These are courses in spoken and written Icelandic, focusing on basic social conditions, everyday needs and simple social transactions which students experience in their everyday life in Iceland. Students will also gain an understanding of the basic features of Icelandic and get a deeper insight in Icelandic culture and society. Please note that the places may be limited so make sure to register in time. Information about school and how to register to the international students as well as better.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Apps and websites<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A variety of resources are available for students who wish to learn and improve their Icelandic language skills:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>TWO<\/strong> is an app with 80+ lessons that form a single storyline, with new grammar weaved into each conversation. Get the <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.gamithra.tvikapp&amp;hl=is\">Android<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/is\/app\/tv\u00edk\/id6475675003\">Apple<\/a> app.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Just talk<\/strong>\u00a0is an interactive app designed to learn Icelandic. The app is a virtual Icelandic teacher utilizing AI and Icelandic language technology.
