Through the ages the sea has been the most important way of transportation. A good harbor was essential for settlement in Iceland and a lighthouse was essential for a good harbor.

The building is a symbolic lighthouse which relates to Icelandic harbor history. It stands in the dock header of the harbor and buries itself into the breakwater of the harbor and through it as light passages which shine into the winter darkness. The light passages define the journey through the building which slopes down towards the sea and is inspired by the horizontal circular journey of the classic lighthouse. The building serves travelers and the ferry. Its spaces are arranged along the light passages which emit both natural and electric lighting into the spaces and provide different views, into the breakwater or out to sea.
