Barðaströnd has faced severe depopulation in recent decades, due to decreasing employment opportunities. Farming, which is the main industry in this area, has developed rapidly in a short time and now requires less manpower. The greatest tidal differences in Iceland, are in Breiðafjörður, a difference of up to five metres. This massive difference limits the access of ferries to be able to dock in Brjánslækur due to the shallows and a steep car ramp. The building solves this and gives opportunity to establish a tourism industry focusing on small fishing boats and sightseeing. Breiðafjörður is famous for its rich wildlife and incredible beauty.

The structure (building) floats so the ferry and the dock will always be level with one another. The connection between the small boat dock and its surroundings becomes interesting, which cooperates with tides.
