Research

The Lab for Artistic Research in Music (LARM) facilitates practice-based research in all areas of music with emphasis on diverse artistic research methodologies. The LARM‘s activities support and reinforce the Master Programme through organising seminars, encouraging interdisciplinary dialogues and collaborations, and by developing courses. Research areas range from experimental music, notation, animated notation, artistic experimentation, new instrument building, contemporary music performance, performer‘s identity, and music software development.

Relationship to art institutions

Substantial part of the Master Programme in Composition at the IAA involves collaborative artistic projects. For this reason the Department of Composition has joined forces with various institutions and businesses which in one way or another relate to the activities of the Department: ensembles and orchestras, the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service, cultural centres, art galleries, theatres and software companies. In some instances the collaboration is formal but in others more informal.

The Master Programme in Composition has established special links for collaborative projects with the Folk Music Centre in Siglufjörður, the computer game company CCP and the CAPUT ensemble, among others.

Links to music festivals

Dark Music Days (Myrkir músíkdagar) is an annual music festival for contemporary music. The programme consist mainly of Icelandic music along with selected new music from abroad.
