The New Environments lecture series is curated by Thomas Pausz @thomaspausz, programme director of the MA Design & New Environments at the Iceland University of the Arts. @iua_ma_design.

Our next lecturer is Justine, a biologist eager to change food systems by creating a more sustainable and circular way to produce food. Hringvarmi is a circular Ag tech startup co-founded by Justine Vanhalst and Dr. Alexandra Leeper. The Hringvarmi solution, harnesses excess heat from data centres and channels it into purpose-built biomes that provide space and infrastructure for controlled environment food production. The company aims to solve multiple intersectional challenges with one circular economy solution while creating a vibrant community for food producers. The project is being test-driven in Iceland, a country where 80% of the fresh fruits and vegetables are imported, a significant carbon footprint and where a sustainable minded data centre sector is flourishing.

The MA Design & New Environments is a new interdisciplinary programme composed of design, media, and environmental studies. The MA D.N.E explores emerging environmental and societal challenges and new ways of mapping the entanglements of nature and technology. The programme fosters research and practices, which bridge interdisciplinary knowledge to instigate change and transform obsolete systems. The focus for 2023/25 is on Climate and Food Systems. This theme is explored in collaboration with scientists from the University of Iceland, practitioners, and partners from the industry in Iceland.
