I use textiles as an investigative tool to understand my bodily experiences with which language fails me. Those experiences which solidly orient you within the boundaries of your own body. My work is a research of these experiences, utilizing space, bodies, material, sound, time. Exploring our relation to our bodies, to the space our bodies occupy, and the conversation that happens between. This living pause between body and space, experience and language, tension and release.
In this in between space, I have invited two dancers, or investigators, to activate the installation throughout the exhibition period. Invited to explore, wander, move through, burrow within, undo and disrupt. Over time. Allowing the installation to breath as it changes.
A fluid conversation between artist, space, dancer, audience. Working with their bodies’ ability to understand space in a way beyond words. The audience, while mindful of the investigators, allowed to move through the changing pathways of the installation. Exploring tension, temporality, duration, anxious threads that are at once released. Coming undone.
Sarah Finkle (b. 1989) is a New York City based fiber artist. She received her bachelor's degree in studio art at Skidmore college, with a concentration in textiles and sculpture and is currently in the Fine Arts Masters program at Listaháskoli Ísland. Along with exhibiting her works within New York City, Iceland and abroad, she has further explored textiles within scenic design, creating interactive fiber installations for theater and dance productions. Her work is a continuous search of space, of material, of the body. How our bodies feel, react, and engage with space and the ongoing challenge to make these feelings tangible.
