They are dying due to the distance between them and the rich blood supply the others in the stratum basale lie on top off.  
They shrink and pull away from their neighbour.  
Their surface appears to boil.  
The DNA in their nucleus condenses and fragments break away and escape.  
Like bubbles from a pot of hot water.
