The Power of Nature

This master’s project The Power of Nature, is based on a course I organized and taught for the Mentor Project Friendsship, which is financially supported by the Icelandic Childrens Welfare Fund. The Iceland Academy of the Arts is affiliated with the the Icelandic Children’s Welfare Fund and handles the reception and training for the mentors and their participants.

In this thesis I will firstly discuss the theories and pedagogy the project is based on, such as education for sustainability, multicultural education and empowerment through art education. Secondly, I will discuss the course itself, The Power of Nature. It is my hope that the project will become valuable contribution to to discussion on how art education empower marginalized groups. I hope the participation in the workshop was empowering for the mentors and the participating children.

The project is 20-credit Masters thesis for the M.Art.Ed degree in Art Education at the Icelandic Academy of the Arts. The project outlines my own beliefs; how I see my role as an art educator, my own own teaching statement and how I work with my own beliefs on sustainability, multicultural education and empowerment through art education.
