About the programme

The BA program in filmmaking is a 180-credit program designed for those who have already completed their matriculation examination, show an interest or talent in visual storytelling, and wish to work in filmmaking or plan to go on to graduate studies.

The program focuses on key positions in filmmaking, but offers diverse education in six professional areas - directing, scriptwriting, production, cinematography, editing and sound. Students are primarily educated in feature filmmaking, but also receive some training in documentary production.

In addition to providing students with the tools required by the profession, the department strives to develop and develop creative collaborations between disciplines, to encourage students to apply critical thinking to their own work and the art form in general, and to train students to give and receive constructive criticism in all areas.

The department also encourages responsible work practices and sustainability in filmmaking, and welcomes the challenges that come with new technologies.

Study structure

The BA program in Filmmaking spans three years. In the first year, all students take the same courses, and each student is the author of numerous exercises designed to train the fundamentals of the six traditional fields of filmmaking.

Students begin the second year by making short documentaries. The rest of the school year is then devoted to making everyone's first "proper" feature film. Through this process, each student begins to think closer to his or her major, through specialized electives.

In the third year, students gain experience of working life through an internship, write a BA thesis, carry out their final project, and begin to think about life after graduation.

After graduation

At the end of the program, students will have acquired extensive basic knowledge of six traditional professional areas of filmmaking, as well as increased knowledge of their chosen specialty. They will have the skills required by the profession and/or to start a postgraduate course in filmmaking.

Application and admission process

  • The electronic application is filled out in the application portal.
  • Note: you must fill in all fields marked with a star and attach the requested documents, pay the application fee and confirm the application.
  • A certified copy of the diploma (a photocopy is not valid) with a stamp from the relevant school and a scanned curriculum vitae and attached to the electronic application.
  • If supporting documents are not in order, the applicant will receive a mail and the option to correct the application.
  • The applicant receives confirmation that the electronic application is valid.

An admissions committee made up of professionals from the field of filmmaking and/or teachers at the Department of Film Arts, reviews all applications from applicants who meet the department's admission requirements.

  • Admission process

Those who make it to the sample group are then invited to an interview. The purpose of the interview is to explore the candidates' interest in their prospective studies, attitude and attitude towards filmmaking and ideas about their own work. The applicant can expect to have to provide more detailed information about the points mentioned in the application, and especially to be prepared to discuss the creative works he submitted. For those applicants who are abroad or for some reason cannot attend in person, an interview with the admissions committee is offered via teleconferencing.

The cohort of the relevant year is then selected from among those who were invited for an interview. Applicants who receive an invitation to stay at a school must confirm by paying a confirmation fee. The fee is non-refundable but adds up to tuition fees for the first semester. The decision of the admissions committee is final and the committee is not obliged to give further explanations of its decision.

  • Admission requirements

It is assumed that applicants have completed a matriculation exam or equivalent. It is desirable that applicants have attended courses related to filmmaking during their secondary school education, but this is not a requirement. In individual cases, the University of the Arts is authorized to grant admission to the school to applicants who possess knowledge and experience that is considered adequate preparation for a bachelor's degree program, but it is assumed that applicants have completed no less than 105 units from the older system of the upper secondary school level or 150 upper secondary school units according to the new system.

The language of instruction is mostly Icelandic. However, individual courses are taught in English, so it is expected that students are able to understand, write and speak both languages.
