Instrumental / Vocal performance

The BMus programme in instrumental/vocal performance is structured as classical vocal or instrumental study, with emphasis on the performance of classical and contemporary music. The performance major comprises private lessons, accompaniment, and master classes. Strong emphasis is placed on inviting foreign and domestic guest teachers to hold master classes.

Wide-ranging ensemble work is an important part of the programme, and students can receive academic credit for participation in symphony orchestras and other large ensembles in Iceland and abroad. Students perform in solo and chamber music recitals several times each semester, as well as participating in concerts featuring works by composition students within the IUA Music Department. BMus students give public recitals as part of their final project.

The department offers courses in baroque music, contemporary music, stage presence, sight reading, improvisation, pronunciation for vocalists, and the fundamentals of instrumental and vocal teaching. The aim of the study programme is to educate well-rounded musicians with solid knowledge, skills, and proficiency in their chosen field.

BMus students in vocal and instrumental performance who wish to study abroad before completing their bachelor’s-level studies are offered the opportunity to complete their studies at IAA with a Diploma (60-120 ECTS). In order to do so, however, they must have grades no lower than 8.0 in their major subject and must have been formally accepted to a university-level music school abroad.

Also offered within this programme is a two-year Diploma programme comprising 60 units. The Diploma programme is intended for talented students who are still in upper secondary school but satisfy the IAA’s requirements concerning musical knowledge and skill. Students complete their studies with a Diploma examination culminating with a public recital. The university-level units completed will shorten commensurably the time needed to complete a bachelor’s degree.
