Búi Bjarmar Aðalsteinsson product designer and part-time lecturer at the Department of Design and Architecture (Icelandic University of the Arts) will give the lecture Temper Genetics - Designing genetically modified humans, Thursday, November 29 at 12:15.The lecture is a part of the lecture series Gestagangur in November conducted by the Department of Design and Architecture and is the last lecture of the month.

Búi has specialised in design related to food and food systems and has recently focused on future scenarios of food production. Genetic modification will most probably play a large role in such future scenarios, where we might be modifying both ourselves and the ecosystems we live in. In the lecture, Búi will focus on a work in progress titled: Temper Genetics. The lecture is in fact a performance where Búi takes on the role of an employee of Temper Genetics, advocating the opportunities related to the genetic modification of humans.
In all likelihood it will not be as simple as we think to ban or limit progress in the field of genetic modifications. The main goal of the project is to start a dialogue about genetic modification, encouraging more people to engage with the future. The lecture will be in English.
Búi holds a BS degree in Psychology from the University of Iceland and a BA degree in Product Design from the Iceland University of the Arts. He studied for a Master’s degree in design at the Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo. Búi is the co-founder of BSF Productions, a company that aimed at utilising insects for human consumption. Later he founded the design studio Grallaragerðin ehf. that specialises in using waste material for their production. Since 2015, Búi teaches at the Programme of Product Design at the Iceland University of the Arts.
