Fýsn alda á ágæti bjaðar og þess yfir

Humans love to own objects and qualities from nature, and desire the ability to wield supernatural abilities. You can find evidence of this almost anywhere. In most people’s homes and offices there are potted plants or maybe even jewels or precious stones, movies and video games benefit from their customers’ interest in superheroes and the supernatural, artists have long practised recreating natural phenomena where they don’t belong, photographs of exotic places hang in peoples’ homes, tourists frequent natural history museums, which in turn profit from ticket sales… the list goes on.

The exhibition Fýsn alda á ágæti bjaðar og þess yfir consists of five images. They present bodies performing inhuman deeds experiencing unattainable adventures in an unusual setting. The images are made from photos I’ve taken all around Iceland, put together without respect to geographical integrity to create unique landscapes and vistas for the characters.

The images were created this year using the newest available computer technology from recent photos of land formations in Icelandic landscapes. The wording of the titles refer to an ancient verse form used in Eddaic poetry called fornyrðislag (way of ancient words or old word style). Fornyrðislag has gone in and out of fashion throughout the ages, and typically trends alongside romanticism.

From October 1st to November 26th a series of 26 solo shows by 3rd year students in Fine Art will be taking place in Laugarnes.

Each thursday a solo exhibition will be opened at three different locations in Laugarnes: The Cube on 2nd floor, Navel in the middle of the building on first floor and Hulduland on the north side of the building on first floor. Openings are from 17:00 - 19:00 on Thursdays.
