Tales of the Cities: Bogotá and Medellin
 

Massimo Santanicchia is an architect working across disciplines, associate Professor and Program Director in Architecture at the Department of Design and Architecture at the Iceland University of the Arts. Massimo's emphasis, both in his work as a teacher and as an architect, has been on the notion of cosmopolitan citizenship and architectural education. How this paradigm can generate a renewed understanding on the architects’ roles and responsibilities towards our common social and ecological environment aimed at using the design process as an instrument for the betterment of the world. Massimo’s research’s subject areas include citizenship, systems thinking, and architectural education specifically how schools can help building social awareness, collaboration and activism into their curricula.
 
In his lecture Massimo will focus on the urban and social transformation that have been occurring in Bogotá and Medellin in the last twenty years. It reports on how new forms of politics and governance based on inclusion and investment in the public good have generated positive economic and social benefits for their inhabitants.
 
The lecture will be Thursday the 12th of Desember at 13:10 in lecture hall A, Þverholt 11. It will be in English and all are welcome!
