Abel Szalontai

Abel Szalontai is a photographer and head of Media at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest. Abel will give a lecture about his researches Tuesday the 14th of January 2020 at the Iceland University of the Arts, Þverholt 11 at 12:15.

Abel Szalontai graduated in 1998 at the Department of Visual Communication at MOME.
He started his professional career in the field of applied photography by working as a freelancer for magazines. He returned to the university in 2003 where he first started out as a studio manager then as a lecturer at the Department of Photography. After leading the Department he finally became the Head of Media Institute in 2014.
His doctoral research explored the possibilities of crossing between repetition-based visual and intellectual spaces. He received his Ph.D. in 2013.

After graduation he shifted his photographic focus on ports and places where departures and arrivals happen at the same time. At these spots the associated surveillance system can be interpreted very clearly in their own geographical, economic and cultural context which phenomenon he uses in his imagery. Abel works with the mental and physical possibilities of frontiers and he aims to create order in the chaotic present of visual barriers and to realise the expanse of horizon.
The lecture is a part of the Icelandic Photo Festival, it will be in English and all are welcome.
