Symbiosis

The Endosymbiotic Theory describes how the cell, the smallest living unit of an organism, evolved in coexistence with bacteria. This created a new cell organ, the mitochondria, which provides the cell with nutrients. In Hvalfjörður, a new community within the Whaling Station will take on the image of the cell, and a community of seafarers engaged in seaweed cultivation to counteract the harmful effects of industry and agriculture on the sea will act as the mitochondria. Old buildings coexist with new ones and new industries with old ones, and all work together like a cells organelle in a symbiotic relationship.
