Applicants shall possess a Baccalaureate in Composition or related fields of art and theory. Emphasis is placed on applicants possessing knowledge and skill for musical creation. Students should have an independent and personal vision along with initiative and ability to follow their ideas through. Students submit a detailed study proposal where description of artistic intent and personal goals and scope of research study is set out. Students also submit a portfolio.

A specially appointed admission committee assesses applications based on submitted materials and interviews.

Language requirements
The Master Programme in Composition is an international course.
English is the main language of instruction but tutoring may be in English or Icelandic. Students must be able to express themselves in both written and spoken English. It may be required that the applicant pass a TOEFL test.
