The technical aspect of fashion design: from design to outsourced production.

Jobs for fashion designers and patternmakers in developed countries have changed drastically because of new technology, the worldwide internet and globalization. New professions have emerged and apparel production has increasingly moved to Asia. The purpose of this project was to study the effect this change has had on jobs and education in the fashion industry and to show that it is important to confront them. This is done partly by looking into the job of technical fashion designer and the importance of this relatively new profession for apparel brands that are in collaboration with foreign manufacturers. The essay includes finding out what educational elements this profession needs to build on.

The essay is divided in three main parts: Theoretical approach and reasoning, conception to a course that prepares student for the job of technical fashion designer, draft to a handbook about product development process and the making of technical package, this combined is the process from design to outsourced production. The status of technical design was examined in fashion education abroad and in Iceland both in the Iceland Academy of the Arts and in the Technical College Reykjavík. The conclusion was that technical skills are lacking in both Icelandic schools to be proficient for technical fashion designers. Study line that would cover this could be called technical fashion design and product development management. The school that seemed to be best suited to institute this education was the Technical College of Reykjavík and a concept is promoted of a new study line in connection with the two-year base program in garment making technique.
