In her work as designer and teacher Birna has placed focus on typography, complex typography, book design, layout and book making as a tool to visualise ideas. She aims to communicate the importance of detailing and overview both in her design work and teaching. As a researcher she has placed focus on typography, legibility and readability. As well as teaching at the IUA Birna has run the design practice Studio Studio with Arnar Freyr Guðmundsson since 2014.
