We have been working with Satu Herrala for the 2016/17 cycle and it cannot be overstated what she brings to the programme. She will continue in her role as a mentor – leading a residency programme in collaboration with Manolis Tsipos and entering into close dialogue with particular students.
“Satu is one of the most exciting curators and artists working in the international scene today. And in my view she represents the best of the best in the way she works with artists as a programmer. She practices what she speaks and takes the politics and ethics of what she does as seriously as the work it produces. She is also a frequent guest of Iceland – having worked here as an artist and visited many times as a curator. This awareness of the specificity of the Icelandic context is rare when working with artists and curators based elsewhere”.
Alexander Graham Roberts, programme director.
Satu Herrala works as a choreographer and curator, and since the beginning of 2015, as the artistic director of Baltic Circle international festival of theatre and performance in Helsinki. She graduated with an MA in choreography from the University of the Arts Helsinki.
Her works have been presented at brut Wien, Tanzquartier Wien, Zodiak Center for New Dance in Helsinki, Spielart festival in Munich and ANTI festival in Kuopio, among others. Her curatorial works include DO TANK programs, Make Arts Policy event and a series of Sauna Lectures at various venues and festivals.
